Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife

You can enter up to three images for this award, which is for the best photograph of a species officially listed in the 2005 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable or lower risk at an international or national level (if the latter, please supply details). Prize: ?1,000.

To check endangered status you can find the Red List at: www.redlist.org, go to the Database section

Adult categories

You can enter up to three colour transparencies (slides) or digital images (see digital rules) in each of the following categories. Each category has a first prize of ?500 and a second prize of ?250.
1 Animals in Their Environment

The habitat must be as important a part of the picture as the species being photographed, and the picture must convey a feeling of the relationship between them.
2 Animal Behaviour: Birds

3 Animal Behaviour: Mammals

4 Animal Behaviour: All Other Animals

Pictures in all three categories must show interesting, memorable behaviour and will be judged on what is being revealed as well as on aesthetic criteria.
5 The Underwater World

These photographs can show marine or freshwater animals or plants. The most important criteria are aesthetics, but judges will also be looking for unique and memorable imagery.
6 Animal Portraits

The picture must capture the ‘character’ or ‘spirit’ of the subject and focus principally on it.
7 In Praise of Plants

Pictures must highlight the beauty and/or importance of flowering and non-flowering plants.
8 Urban and Garden Wildlife

The judges will be looking for original pictures showing wild animals or plants in obviously urban or suburban settings (including gardens).
9 Nature in Black and White

The subject can be or include any wild landscape, animal, plant or other living organism. Prints will be judged on their aesthetic appeal, and will include the qualityof printing. New for 2006 – digital photography is permitted (See rule 5)
10 Creative Visions of Nature NEW

Photographs should take inspiration from nature, but reveal new ways of seeing natural subjects or scenes. They can be figurative, abstract or conceptual and use any format, but must provoke an emotional or thoughtprovoking reaction, whether through their beauty or imaginative interpretation. Judges will be looking for originality and artistic vision.
11 Wild Places

This is a category for landscape photographs, but the pictures must convey a true feeling of wildness and create a sense of awe and wonder.
12 The World in Our Hands

A picture in this category must be thoughtprovoking, and must convey our relationship with the environment, whether our connection with it, effects on it or dependence on it. The image must also be memorable, whether graphic, symbolic or poignant.

Shell Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006

If you’re 17 or under, this is the section for you. We accept prints as well as slides or digital photos, and you can enter pictures of any wild animals, plants or landscapes. The judges will be looking for original, beautiful or striking shots rather than rare or exotic subjects. Creatures or places close to home that you know well or have easy access to may be your best subjects. The way you frame your subject is as important as getting the focus right, and the level and type of light is a vital ingredient.

Shell Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006

This title will be given to the young photographer whose individual image is judged to be the most striking and memorable (selected from all the entries). Prize: ?500, and a day out with a well-known wildlife photographer.
