Nemes Csaba ´90-es években készült fotósorozatai közül több már ismertté vált, közülük az Időtlen a Ludwig Múzeum (Budapest), a Lopott homlokzatok pedig a Pompidou Centre (Párizs) gyűjteményének része.

Folyamatos múlt című munkájáról a művész így ír:

1996-ban egy rezidencia-programon vettem részt Hollandiában, ahol találkoztam egy holland barátommal, akinek volt egy nagyon szép kis archívuma sok-sok régi fotóalbumból. Itt találtam rá egy, az ´50-es és ´60-as évekből származó, a helyi létet tükröző anyagra, emellett pedig egy ugyanebből az időszakból származó magyar fotókönyvre is. Igazi felfedezés volt, hogy mennyire hasonlóak a két különböző országban készült képek, sőt néha szinte ugyanolyanok, mind a kompozíciót, mind a témát, mind a szemlélet-módot tekinve. Bár a fotók ideológiai háttere épp ellentétes volt, a kor vizuális trendjei – úgy tűnik – meghatározóbbak voltak, mint a hideg háború időszakának gondolkodás-módja.

A hasonló fotókból párokat alakítottam ki, egymás mellé helyezve őket, s az eredményt saját felvételeimmel dokumentálva. Ezzel a módszerrel készült a sorozat.

More of the photoseries of Csaba Nemes from the –’90-ies have been wellknown: the Timeless belongs to the collection of the Ludwig Museum, Budapest, the Stohlen Fassades is the part of the collection of the Pompidou Center, Paris.

The artist himself wrights on the Continuous Past:

I was on a residency program in the Netherlands in 1996, where I met a Dutch friend of mine, who had got a very nice small archive with many old photo albums. Here I found material on the local life from the ´50s and ´60s and I discovered a Hungarian book on the same period as well.

I discovered, how similar the images from both countries were – sometimes almost the same (concerning the composition, the topic, the point of view, etc.). Although the ideological backround of the photos were contrary, the visual trends of the age was more dominant, than the way of thinking in the Cold War.

I created pairs of photos from the similar images, putting them next to each other and I documented the result on photographs. This was the method, how the series was born.
