There is Nothing New Under the Sun, azaz nincs új a nap alatt – szól Geibl Kata önálló kiállításának és monográfiájának nyomasztó, ugyanakkor mégis felszabadító címe. A kijelentés tézisszerűnek tűnik: a törekvésünk, hogy életünk során valami merőben újat és rendkívülit hozzunk létre, eleve kudarcra ítéltetett. Geibl sorozatát azonban mégsem a nihilista beletörődés jellemzi, fotói sokkal inkább napjaink folyamatos, megállás nélküli küszködésére reflektálnak; arra, hogy mindezek ellenére mégis úgy élünk és dolgozunk, mintha a munka által valami módon mégiscsak üdvözülhetnénk.

Geibl munkásságának egyik fő jellegzetessége, hogy képein egészen lírai módon képes megörökíteni a korszellemet. Kiemelten fontos számára, hogy olyan társadalmi kérdésekkel foglalkozzon, amelyeknek hatásait mindannyian a bőrünkön érezzük, ugyanakkor művei túlmutatnak azon, hogy bizonyos ideológiák illusztrációként működjenek. Metaforákon keresztül kelnek élet a klímaváltozás vagy épp a késő-kapitalista társadalmi berendezkedés okozta feszültségek: az igásló, a szorgos méh, az ég felé törő felhőkarcoló vagy a tökéletesre formált férfitest szabad asszociációkon keresztül ugyanazt a neurózist testesítik meg. Lángolunk mi, a pszichénk, a testünk, és lángol körülöttünk a Föld is.

A sorozatot kiegészítő See Daylight (azaz napvilágot látni) című esszékötet, amely teljes terjedelmében végigolvasható a galériatérben is, azokat a kérdéseket igyekszik montázsszerűen felrajzolni, hogy hogyan is formálják a fiatal művészek pályáját a piaci hatások. Elméleti fejtegetések és anekdotikus, személyes történetek váltakoznak a könyvben, amely amellett, hogy végtelenül szórakoztató és lebilincselő, kétségkívül keserédes is: kiváló látlelete annak, hogyan is próbál egy Y-generációs művész navigálni nemcsak a művészeti intézményrendszer, de a gazdasági realitások útvesztőiben is. E tekintetben pedig túl is mutat a kreatív szakma határain: Geibl korrajza a munkáról és az érvényesülés lehetőségeiről szól, ez pedig bárki számára ismerős lehet, aki valaha küszködött azzal, hogy megtalálja a helyét korunk kapitalista realizmusában.

A művészről

Geibl Kata (1989, Budapest) fotográfus, Budapesten és Hágában végezte tanulmányait, jelenleg a MOME Doktori Iskolájának hallgatója, illetve ugyanott a Fotográfia Tanszék óraadója. Munkáiban a globális problémák, a kapitalizmus, az antropocén, illetve a fotográfia mint médium kétértelműségének kérdéseire reflektál.

Szabad bölcsész háttere nagyban befolyásolja azt, ahogyan projektjeit megvalósítja. A filozófia és a kultúratudomány gondolatköréből inspirálódva Geibl metaforikus képekkel igyekszik kitölteni az űrt ott, ahol a szavak cserbenhagynak. Geibl érdeklődése a fotográfia kétértelműsége iránt – aziránt, ahogyan elsajátítjuk, hogy a fotókra bizonyítékként tekintsünk, ugyanakkor mégis komoly gyanakvással fordulunk feléjük – kitapintható a praxisában is. Ezen feszültségből építkezve valós jelenségek következményeit tárja elénk, anélkül, hogy olyan egyértelműen dokumentarista eszközöket használna, amelyek általában hitelességet sugároznak. Ehelyett különböző zsánereket vegyítve alkotja meg saját vizuális univerzumát – kommentárja pedig legalább annyira szól a fotográfiához fűződő viszonyunkról, mint a kapitalizmus következményeiről.

There is Nothing New Under the Sun – the title of the solo show and first monograph of Kata Geibl is grim but liberating at the same time. This statement has a thesis-like nature: our efforts to achieve something utterly new and extraordinary in our life are destined to fail. And yet, Geibl’s series is not characterized by nihilist resignation, her photographs rather reflect on the continuous, non-stop struggles of our day-to-day dealings: on how, against all odds, we still live and work as if we could somehow reach salvation through our labor.

One of the main characteristics of Geibl’s work is how her photographs are capable of capturing the Zeitgeist in a truly poetic manner. She focuses on social issues that have such a serious impact on us we can feel it in our bones but the significance of her works go beyond illustrating certain ideologies. Through metaphors, the tensions caused by climate change or the late-capitalist social order come to life: via free associations, the draft horse, the busy bee, the skyscraper soaring up to the sky or the perfectly shaped male figure all embody the same neurosis. It is us, our psyches, our bodies that burn, and meanwhile so does the Earth.

See Daylight, the book accompanying the series that is available to read in the gallery space in its entirety, sketches a montage of young artists’ experiences entering the art scene, and how the forces of the art market shape these careers. Theoretical commentaries and anecdotal, personal stories alternate in the book, that – besides being extremely amusing and engaging – is also bittersweet: an outstanding report on how millennial artists attempt to navigate not only in the artistic institutional system, but also in the labyrinth of economic realities. In this respect, the book goes beyond the framework of the creative industries: Geibl’s book deals with the questions of labor and the possibilities of success – dilemmas that are surely familiar to anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in our capitalist realist age.

About the artist

Kata Geibl (1989, Budapest) is a photographer, she studied in Budapest and The Hague. She is currently a PhD student at the Doctoral school of MOME, where she also teaches at the Photography Department. Her work is mainly focused on global issues, capitalism, the Anthropocene, and the ambiguities of the photographic medium.

Coming from a background in Liberal Arts has informed the way she creates her projects. Drawing concepts from Philosophy and Cultural Studies, Geibl steps in with metaphorical images to fill in the gaps where words fall short. Geibl’s long-standing interest in photography’s ambiguity — how we are trained to treat photographs as evidence while also approaching them with intense suspicion – is palpable throughout her practice. Harnessing this tension, she presents us with the implications of a very real phenomenon without adhering to straight documentary methods that habitually signal truth. Instead, she mixes genres to produce her visual universe — a commentary on our relationship to photography as much as the implications of capitalism.
