Armenian Cultural Evening: Photo Exhibition opening, Music and Dance

June 28 @ 18:00 - 20:00 CEST

🤩 We are happy to invite you to an enchanting evening dedicated to the culture of Armenia. 📷 Ilona Vaida’s photo exhibition entitled AZAT ‘One who is free’ is going to evoke the spirit of the land and its people, accompanied with guitar music 🎸 and Armenian folk dance. 💃The music and dancing will be supported by the Havq Armenian National Dance Group and Movses Ayarian. We will learn Armenian songs and dances.

About the photographer: „It has been a year and a half since my return from volunteering in Armenia. It was a defining moment in my life so far. What did I know about Armenia then? Not much, apart from the fact that it is considered the first Christian state and has beautiful landscapes, and perhaps that it is located Middle East. Yet it became the setting for a six-month love project.
On the ground, my task was soon to organise a weekly schedule for a team of 6 people, with whom I worked in the Ararat countryside: building a barn or a bathroom, running a cultural programme, teaching French, distributing hygiene kits and talking.
One of my tools that perhaps helped me to be “in the moment”, to observe, to be present, was my Olympus Mju-i camera. The pictures I took with it, from portraits to landscapes, show the environment that filled my everyday life during the six months. Families we visited, children we played with every day, monasteries we hiked to.
When I came back home (a year and a half ago), and first exhibited the pictures I was still preoccupied by the meaning of ‘home’ was, a safe place where you can be in peace, without feeling constantly questioned. Nowadays, I am more preoccupied by looking for answers regarding the meaning of volunteering as an institution and how to integrate the volunteering experience into my everyday life.
That’s why I’m very happy to present my pictures to the members of the Mira Intercultural Community and to the Armenian community in Budapest as well.”
