This exhibition will show twentieth-century Hungarian photography at its best, highlighting the impact and influence of Hungarian photographers throughout the world. It will include a wide selection of historical, political and cultural images, some provocative, some beautiful, some haunting, some magical.

For a country with a relatively small population, Hungary has produced a remarkable number of talented photographers. Yet international recognition was achieved only by those who made the decision to leave Hungary and become resident elsewhere – sometimes in another European country, sometimes in the United States. Without exception, those who remained on home ground have failed to establish outside Hungary the reputation and renown they deserve.

This collection of captivating images, never previously seen in Britain, will address this imbalance by showcasing the work of lesser-known photographers alongside established photographic legends.

The Proud Galleries, which opened on the edge of Covent Garden in 1998 with a mission to bring affordable high-quality photography to a mainstream market, have hosted many of Britain’s most talked-about recent exhibitions, including Rankin, Underexposed, Requiem Vietnam, High Society, Shots that changed the world, Unicef and, most recently, Rankin and David Bailey. They are collaborating on this exhibition with the distinguished curator Károly Kincses, founder of the Photomuseum of Kecskemét, in a town on the edge of the Great Hungarian Plain.

Ha valaki azt az elérhetetlen célt tűzi ki maga elé, hogy megismerjen egy országot töviről-hegyire, tájait, településeit, az ott élő embereket, a velük megtörtént eseményeket, az bizonyosra veheti, hogy akár egész életét rááldozva sem juthat megfelelő eredményre. Mert minél többet lát, minél több ismerethez jut, annál pontosabban tudja, mi minden marad még rejtve előtte. Ezért célszerű vágyainkat redukálni, s nem mindent, csak egy kis szeletkét megízlelni az egészből, reménykedve abban, hogy az egészben, mint egy csepp vízben, ott az egész tenger.
Ehhez segíti hozzá a Magyar Fotográfiai Múzeum a Proud Galériába látogatót, amikor egymilliós gyűjteményéből kiválasztott százat, azzal a szándékkal, hogy általuk megmutasson valamit a huszadik századi Magyarország sajátosságaiból, lakóiból, történelméből. Abból a feltevésből indultunk ki, hogy Magyarország érdekes hely, nem nagyon kímélte őt az elmúlt század történelme. Továbbá abból, hogy Magyarország igen sok tehetséges fényképész szülőhelye, innen származik André Kertész, Brassai, Robert Capa, Moholy Nagy László, Munkácsi Márton és még sokan mások. Ezért, ha egy ország önmagában érdekes, s sok jó fotográfus fényképezett ott, akkor feltételezhető, hogy a legjava munkásságukból válogatott képek sem lesznek érdemtelenek. Jöjjenek, ítéljék meg, igazat írtam-e.
