A Mai Manó Ház kettős előadása egy Birkás Ákostól származó, a fotográfiára vonatkoztatva provokatív szóösszetételt jár körül, ami arra a ma egyre aktuálisabb gondolatra utal, hogy a telefonjainkkal és digitális fényképezőgépeinkkel dokumentált életünkön túl is létezik világ, csak már hajlamosak vagyunk elfelejteni, hogy mit is gondoltunk róla, amikor nem volt ilyen könnyű megörökíteni mindennapjaink eseményeit. Az anti-kamera szóösszetétel tapasztalataink és ismereteink képek általi közvetítettségére utal, és arra, ami a képrögzítés határain kívül esik, hogy megfoghatatlanságában váljon fontossá.
Az előadások a fotóművészet nem-lefényképezhető világ megörökítésére tett kísérleteit járják körül David Claerbout és Ősz Gábor munkásságán keresztül. A kettős előadáson az alkotók külön-külön beszélnek munkásságukon keresztül a képrögzítés filozófiai és számukra releváns kérdéseiről. Bemutatkozásukat a Mai Manó Házban a klasszikus, fotótörténeti megközelítésekhez való viszonyuk indokolja. Előadásaik a fényképezés mai irányultságainak eredetére kérdeznek rá egy klasszikus fotóstúdió környezetében munkáik párhuzamba állításával, aminek várható eredménye egy elgondolkodtató és új utakat kereső megközelítése a műfajnak.

David Claerbout 1969-ben született Belgiumban. Festészetet tanult Antwerpenben, majd érdeklődése fokozatosan a film és a fotóművészet irányába fordult. Munkássága leginkább az idő természetével foglalkozó pillanatfelvételekről és mozgóképekről ismert.

Ősz Gábor 1962-ben született Dunaújvárosban. A Magyar Képzőművészeti Főiskola festő szakára járt, majd az amszterdami Rijksacademie posztgraduális képzésén folytatott tanulmányokat. Jelenleg Budapesten él és dolgozik. Konceptuális fotó- és videomunkái a médium alapvető sajátosságait kutatják.

The joint lecture explores a compound word that is provocative in terms of photography and refers to an idea of growing relevance, namely that there does exist a world beyond the one documented by our smartphones and digital cameras, but that we are inclined to forget what we used to think about this ‘other’ world when it was not so easy to make a (photographic) record of the events of our everyday lives. The compound “anti-camera” was first used in the 1970s by Ákos Birkás(1941-2018), the recently deceased artist. It referred to the fact that our notions/perceptions of our surroundings, of world events, or even of ourselves and of those close to us, are closely linked with the pictures made by a camera, for everything that we experience, or do not directly experience, is memorised or encountered via photos or films. The compound “anti-camera” refers to the fact that our knowledge and experiences are mediated by pictures and that what falls outside the boundaries of the visual record should become important in its elusiveness.

The joint lecture explores – through the works of David Claerbout and Gábor Ősz – the attempts made by photographic art to record that part of existence that cannot be photographed. In the joint lecture the artists each speak, through their work, of the philosophical and relevant issues surrounding the shooting of pictures. Their presentation is justified by their relationship with the classical photographic historical approaches. In the joint lecture they seek the origins of today’s orientations in photography by juxtaposing their works within the milieu of a classical photo studio, the anticipated result of which will be a thought-provoking approach to the genre, one that seeks new paths.

David Claerbout was born in Belgium in 1969. He trained as a painter, but became more and more interested in time through investigations in the nature of photography and film. Fusing together the past, present and future into stunning moments of temporal elasticity, his works present profound and moving philosophical contemplations on our perception of time and reality, memory and experience, truth and fiction.

Gábor Ősz was born in Dunaújváros in 1962. He studied painting at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts and then undertook postgraduate studies at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He currently lives and works in Budapest. His conceptual photographic and video works research the essential characteristics of the medium.
