A Vissza a jövőbe – A 19. század a 21. században című kiállítás a hollandiai Foam kezdeményezésében született meg, a németországi C/O Berlinnel együttműködésben. A kiállítás az archaikus mellett kortárs művészek munkáit vonultatja fel, akik olyan technikákat, eljárásokat vagy akár témákat alkalmaznak, amelyek bizonyos szempontból emlékeztetnek a 19. század első felének fotográfusai által is használt módszerekre. E művészek nemcsak ihletet nyernek a fotográfia hajnalának úttörő megoldásaiból, de rendhagyó ötleteikkel tovább is gondolják azokat.

A jelenleg Budapesten, korábban Amszterdamban és Berlinben látható kiállítások bár azonos koncepción alapulnak, más-más munkákkal egészültek ki, így valójában három különböző Vissza a jövőbe kiállításról beszélhetünk. A kerekasztal-beszélgetésen a kiinduló kurátori koncepcióról, a válogatás szempontjairól és a „helyspecifikus” alkotásokról beszélgetünk Kim Knoppers-szel, a Foam kurátorával, a kiállítás ötletgazdájával, valamint Claudia Küssellel, a Budapesten látható anyag kurátorával. A beszélgetésen és a hozzá kapcsolódó vetítésen szó esik a berlini kiállításról is.

Kim Knoppers (1976)

Művészettörténész (University of Amsterdam), a Foam kurátora. 2011 óta számtalan egyéni kiállítás kurátora (Melanie Bonajo, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Anne de Vries, JH Engström és Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs) Az Artists Recipe alapítója, mely a gasztronómia és művészet kapcsolódási lehetőségeit, találkozási pontjait kutatja.

Tóth Balázs Zoltán (1980)

2006-tól a Magyar Fotográfiai Múzeum, 2018-tól a Mai Manó Ház – Magyar Fotográfusok Háza munkatársa, az ELTE BTK Filozófiatudományi Doktori Iskola Esztétika Programjának doktorjelöltje. 2011 és 2013 között a Fiatalok Fotóművészeti Stúdiójának vezetőségi tagja. 2013-ban a North East Document Conservation Center, Andover, USA tanulmányi ösztöndíjasa preventív konzerválási technikák és fotórestauráció témakörben. Kurátorként és szakíróként egyaránt részt vesz a hazai fotográfiai élet szervezésében.

Claudia Küssel

Művészettörténész (Leiden University), a Mai Manó Ház kurátora. 2017 előtt Hollandiában élt és dolgozott, többek között mint a Foam kurátora 2012 – 2015 között. Több egyéni (Richard Mosse, Noémie Goudal, Puklus Péter, Sara Cwynar), és csoportos kiállitás kurátora mint Under Construction, New Positions in American Photography vagy Sputnik Photos, The Geometry of Imagination. Fő kutatási területei a kortárs fotográfia és a photobook.

The exhibition Back to the Future – The 19th Century in the 21st Century was initiated by the Dutch Foam Museum in collaboration with C/O Berlin. Besides some archaic pieces, the exhibition presents the work of contemporary artists who employ techniques, methods, processes and themes that in one way or another resemble those of early nineteenth-century photographers. As well as being inspired by the pioneering years of photography, they build upon them in surprising ways.

Even though the current exhibition in Budapest, as well as the previously displayed shows in Amsterdam and Berlin are based on the same curatorial concept, they were supplemented with different additional pieces, therefor we could speak of three different Back to the Future exhibitions. The panel discussion will focus on the original curatorial concept, the aspect of the selection and on the site-specific works. The participants are Kim Knoppers, curator at Foam and the creator of the core concept, and Claudia Küssel, the curator of the current show in Budapest. During the talk and the joint presentation, the show that took place in Berlin will be discussed as well.

Kim Knoppers (1976)

Art historian (University of Amsterdam), curator at Foam. Since 2011 she has curated several solo exhibitions (Melanie Bonajo, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Anne de Vries, JH Engström and Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs). Founder of the Artists Recipe, which investigates the crossing points of gastronomy and art.

Balázs Zoltán Tóth (1980)

Since 2006 he has been working at the Hungarian Museum of Photography and since 2018 he is part of the Mai Manó House – The Hungarian House of Photographers as a curator. Between 2011-2013 he was a board member of the Studio of Young Photographers. He is a PhD candidate in Aesthetics at the Philosophy department of ELTE. In 2013 he was a scholar at the North East Document Conservation Center (Andover, USA) within the field of preventive conservation techniques and photo-restoration. He is equally active as a curator and writer in the Hungarian photographic field.

Claudia Küssel

Art historian (Leiden University), curator at Mai Manó House. Until 2017 she lived and worked in the Netherlands, among others she was a curator at Foam between 2012 and 2015. She was the curator of several solo (Richard Mosse, Noémie Goudal, Péter Puklus, Sara Cwynar) and group exhibitions, such as Under Construction, New Positions in American Photography, Sputnik Photos and The Geometry of Imagination. Her main research areas are contemporary photography and photobooks.
